My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

The living, beating heart of China, and any nation, is its people. While travelling in urban China I was moved by the lives of the people I saw there, and that even amongst those who lived in the face of hardship and struggle, a rich sense of community and a zest for life were easily found. In this series of photographs I wanted to capture an element of the struggle faced by certain individuals, but also the spirit of community and optimism found in the heart of these people.
Since a young age I’ve been captivated by the beauty and meaning that can be found in the world around us, but have also always been struck how time waits for no man. In the ever changing worlds of individual lives and the ever evolving face of humanity on our planet, capturing moments has become important to me. In my mind images of the world around us are so important to our understanding of the bigger picture. I have two major passions that intertwine with my love for photography; the natural world and social justice issues. Although both seem miles away by definition, both can have a profound impact on man when effectively captured in an image. Currently studying sustainable development at university, along with my ambition to work in educational media in the future; it has long been my dream to work in a field that would influence people’s views and responses to 1) the natural world 2) different cultures 3) the struggles faced by our fellow man. I would value this opportunity to learn from a skilled photographer, as I feel photography firstly; is an extremely powerful way of opening people’s eyes, and broadening people’s minds to the world around them, and secondly; requires skill to effectively and beautifully capture the moment you are trying to do justice.
