Photo Scholarship 2011: A night in Beijing
China | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
The following photos were shot in Beijing, China, over the course of a few separate evenings. As the day ends people often loosen up, showing more of who they are. Given the mood of the people and the lighting during that time day, it makes for very honest photography. These photos document what a typical evening looks like and feels like. Each person carrying on a routine not to different from your own; finishing work, heading home, shopping, living life. More people come out as the dim light of sunset progresses to the dark of night. Making the long commute by bus or subway back home they stop to buy vegetables and meat to make their family dinner. Some still work into the dark hours, people closing up shop late in the evening, or waiting to offer to drive you and your groceries home. There is so much to experience in day to day life. The people you pass, the places you see, endless stimulus pouring into your eyes. A boy holding a balloon, a couple at a bus stop, people going about in their habits. I set out to save those passing moments through my photography, conveying to the viewer a world outside of their own. I see this scholarship as an opportunity to learn how to express more clearly what I see through photography and give more people an opportunity to experience other parts of the world through those photographs. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow in my photographic skills, exploring new techniques and subject matter. Being able to learn by the side of an experienced photographer in a far away place would be and invaluable experience, an opportunity I don’t want to miss.
