Hanging with Teddy and Faulkner

A story of my Travel Treasure? I don't have any travel treasure. Wait! Yes I do. Two summers ago my family and my grandparents packed up and took an RV from Tampa Fl to the grand canyon. I took series of books with me and sat up in the bunk above the driver seat, reading the whole way. Faulkner, Kerouac, Steinbeck, books on history, economics, politics. Anyways, it was a grand road trip and my favorite moment was when we stopped off at the historic El Tovar hotel, a favorite stay of Teddy Roosevelt. I can remember sitting in the lobby reading a Faulkner short story, surrounded by rustic decorum and stuffed animal heads. I love walking in the footsteps of history, and that's what travel is to me. It's a chance to stand on the hallowed ground of events long past.

There are many other scenes from the road trip that I remember, including the time I overheard my grandparents fighting (small spaces bring out the worst in people), but my day at the El Tovar hotel remains my favorite of them all.
