African Lioness (Panthera leo) with cub. Lion cubs are very dependent on family for many months and although the lioness is very aware of antelope around her, any ability to hunt them is severely limited by the presence of a boisterous and undisciplined cub. The pride system allows lionesses to leave offspring with trusted family members whilst they hunt

Leopard (Panthera pardus) walking away. Leopards are mostly active at night, but this female leopard was unusually active in daylight hours, due to the presence nearby of a dependent cub. The quizzical twist of her tail almost dared me to follow her into the bush - I declined the invitation!
