My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Peru | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

This past February I travelled to Jangas Peru on a volunteer service trip and worked with a local NGO to serve elderly community members. The trip was amazing, from the breath-taking views in the Andes to the genuine connections I was able to make with locals in a country completely foreign to me.

But, when I returned from Peru, I realized how hard it was to explain my life-altering trip to others – so I turned to my photographs. I learned a very valuable lesson that inspires me every time I pick up my camera – that a photograph has the ability to do more justice to an experience than words can ever do.

My passion for photography has only grown from there. I have no formal training - I go with my gut and hope for the best. This is why I am applying for this scholarship. I want to learn. I want to improve. I would feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with Jason and learn how to capture the moments many people miss or never get the chance to see firsthand. My dream is to alter perspectives through photographs; winning this contest would help me turn my passion into a reality.

About peruvianperspectives

Meet Francesca. We delivered food and collected firewood for her. She lives in a one-room house, the kitchen is outside and her roof leaks when it rains. When we returned with firewood she was proudly sweeping the dirt floor of her kitchen. She seemed so wonderfully happy and delighted that we had come; I was taken aback by her joviality. When we pulled out a bag of candy and offered it to her, her face lit up like a child’s. She was so shocked by our sudden offering of sweets she staggered over to her chicken’s nest and offered us two eggs insisting we take them in return for the candy. I held back my tears with everything I had and declined her offer. I stood in front of Francesca in disbelief, never had I felt so humbled and so honoured to give someone candy.
