My Scholarship entry - Karoo exploration from behind the camera

It all started with a simple cliche - water droplets on petals and childish chasing of butterflies through the garden. Like many new photographers, I was instantly attracted to 'pretty' things. My camera became my new partner, my faithful friend in this new adventure called photography.
It was only when I applied for and got a job as an equine photographer did I start to learn a little about photography. Left for hours on end in a show ring it was as if I'd gradually become stuck in the sand. And so I became entrapped in my comfort zone, unaware and still blissfully happy snapping away.
When I then arrived at Rhodes University to specialise in photojournalism I found myself struggling to keep my head above the bitter tasting waters of criticism and judgement. Perseverance and determination acted as my water wings. A class trip showed me that it is only by completely emerging oneself in a world which truly allows you to experience it. A trip such as this would teach me more in a day than a weeks worth of lectures and class exercises ever could. I've come a long way since the girl chasing butterflies as if they were dreams, I am just looking for a chance to show it.
