My Video scholarship 2010 entry

As a business major on a volunteer trip in Mississippi, I
visited a 3rd grade classroom. Sitting in the room, I heard a
“whack, whack” and turned to see the teacher hitting one of the students with a
ruler. My world was changed in an
instant. I was stunned and
terrified. I walked up to her desk
grabbed the ruler, spouted some choice words and left the room unable to
breathe. Once I returned from the trip, I changed my major to education and
video production.
Planning my piece took many hours on the phone arranging all
the logistics. I also met with the
directors of the program to figure out what the message we wanted to convey
was.
I
always thought I would be a doc filmmaker, but sometimes life gets in the
way. I went on to teach video
production at a junior high school and a community television station. When I tell a story, I want to make people feel invested in the subject, so they just don’t watch,
but act on it. I also want people
to see the joy and humor in most situations.
