Night Skies that Surprise

The Star's Greeting

If there's one thing in my life that I'll never forget, it will surely be my first shooting star. It was my first year of living in Georgia. My family and I stayed in a country-side town called Doerun where the nights were always crisp and the ambiance of the crickets were always accompanied by the unrelenting croaks of the tree frogs. It was a Monday morning and the colorless sky was bejeweled with countless stars. I was skies like this that my father and I would gaze upon and recite the constellations. As I stood there awaiting the rest of my family so we could make our way to the school I became entranced by the beauty of the sky. Being from the city of Madison, Wisconsin we rarely had skies without light pollution so the heavens above us just remained as an imaginary place that would premiere on some evenings on the National Geographics Channel. I recited the constellations in my head as I made eye contact. Then I spotted something that attracts my attention. A star that resembles a lantern hangs still directly above me. I get nearly two blinks before the object shoots across the treeline leaving me with a jaw-dropping aqua green and royal purple aurora effect. Rendered both speechless and paralyzed by the eerie beauty, I recuperate my thoughts and rush inside where I explain the phenomenal lightshow to my family who are still making last minute preparations. All I receive back from them are a few shrugs and a nod of shallow disbelief. Filled with both excitement and disappointment for there absence I went on about my morning, but still till this day hold on to the mental visualizations of that morning recalling each frame at will.
