My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I studied at the National arts school and majored in painting as I was a carer for my gran with dementia and did not have the money to outlay the costs to do photography. I learnt Photoshop, black and white 35mm film and pinhole photography. The photos I submitted have been created using an iPhone as I no longer own a camera.
When I am not taking pics I'm found interacting with people through my volunteer work and at a migrant detention centre. What I learnt there is when communicating, words are arbitrary; pictures, body language and actions express more as we are always looking. I too am from a migrant background and have travelled in my youth. I also enjoy camping and being outdoors.
I love taking photos as I get to frame everything I see in an instant. What makes me want to take a better shot is my stubbornness and own goals I set myself. Sometimes this leads to slight disappointment but a lesson learnt and other times this drive propels me to work to a point where I surpass my own expectations.
We are too focused on living and work, & often we forget to stop and observe. Photography gives me a chance to share a time or place that others may not get the opportunity to see.
