Fusion

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Monday, August 16, 2010 | 4 photos

These series of photos represent the fusion of the two cultures that Mexico is based on. The clash of the indigenous and spanish has made what this country is and has given its identity and character.
The photos were taken in a town named Cuetzalán in the sierra of a state named Puebla, it is still a place where the modern facilities have not been so much in contact with the people. The poverty that strikes many places in the sierras contrast the faith and spiritual richness that people have.
The first photograph is taken in the downtown where a catholic church and a pole where traditional dancers "fly" every sunday after the mass. The second one is a cross made of the local materials found in Puebla. The third one is taken near the entrance of a waterfall and there are three local kids "fishing" tadpoles to eat in a hole of mud. The last one is a kid holding to his mother in a public transportation on the way to his home in the sierra. Altogether I tried that these images reflect a reality in the heart of the mexican mountains and the poverty and faith that the people live with.
By wining these scholarship I look to show the world a different point of view, reflecting social issues and passing the common ground. Traveling, I think, is an life altering experience that enriches your criteria and can compare your reality with another one.
