12 seconds of darkness

Cabo Polônio

If you, like me, are in an ecological-adventurous vibe, your destiny is Cabo Polônio, Uruguay, in the south of Latin America.
The hard access is done by a two hours walk track from Valizas beach or by one shaking truck. Upon arrival you will understand why so much effort.
Cabo Polônio has no electric energy; has human energy.
The public illumination is set by sparkling spots known as stars. There it's the best sky to observe them, since they don't have competitors. Small organisms that live under the sea emitting light, the "noctilucas", contribute to support the cast of this show. Immerse yourself in this light focus and be amazed by your shimmering skin. You'll feel like in Leonardo DiCaprio's scene, on The Beach film. Remember?
The fixed population is 50 inhabitants (fishermen, artisans and lighthouse officers). Yes, there is also a light from the lighthouse, whose range of 12 seconds emits a beam that denude the paradise and which inspired Jorge Drexler to compose "12 segundos de oscuridad".
The accommodations are simple and often clumsy, with construction following the precepts of bioengineering - solar and eolic energy, composters, clay masonry. Your ecological instinct receives an irresistible invitation to live there forever, so unpretentious and quietly: the world's expected slow-living life.
Entering in the restaurants do not be surprised if the waiter offers you food "canabissada", i.e. with dough made of Cannabis. The weed is legalized in Uruguay and its consumption is as common as drinking Cola in New York.
When you think that Cabo Polônio surprised you enough, you are faced with sluggish sea lions sunbathing on the rocks near the lighthouse. The area is protected as a place of preservation of species.
Leaving Cabo Polônio you will realize that places like this still exist intact on this planet.
