My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Thailand | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos
While on an attempted self destined documentary photography expedition in Thailand, I made friends with an American guy teaching English to high school kids in Lampang. He invited me in to take some photos of the kids while they were performing a weekly parade for the king. The photos I've chosen tell the story of that school.
I have an honours degree in photography and a certificate in political economy from Sydney University. I'm now doing a master's in journalism at the University of Technology Sydney.
While my degree taught me a lot of artistic concepts, the story telling side wasn't touched on. I'm developing my skills in that area with the masters, but that doesn't really compare to gaining life experience with a professional on the job.
I attempted to go at it alone at the end of last year in Thailand, but the experience revealed to me just how much I really don't know about being a photojournalist. I've been trying to build an online presence with a webpage, http://orionmitchell.com.au/ but I don't really know what to do with it. I think my photos are decent, but nothing exceptional. I want to learn from a master.
Being selected to travel and learn from Mr Edwards would blow my mind.
Cheers,
Orion
