My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

I reached Dharamsala at 3 that night. After hitting my head twice against the seat ahead and once on the window next to me, I decided to lie flat across a three-seater with my back-pack lying underneath. With no hotel-booking, I sat, lone passenger, weighing the idea of asking the bus conductor to let me sleep in the bus until sunrise. Before I could ask, he told me he knew a guy who could help. I got off the bus and was introduced to New Guy - Rai Singhji, an unassuming man in his late forties.
New Guy made me walk uphill for about 20 mins. I was starting to feel anxious about walking with a man I’d just met, in an unfamiliar city, at 3 am. I kept a trusted friend’s number on speed-dial, just in case.
Rai Singhji stopped at a door. After a couple of knocks, we heard a woman groan. An old woman in her 80’s, who looked grumpier from being woken than from old age, opened the door. Rai Singhji told her I needed a room. I hadn’t a clue what she said in Punjabi, but it seemed to border on the affirmative. We walked into her room and were hit by an unsanitary smell of medicines. I paid her in advance and left for my room. The room had stained walls, cobwebs, and a latch that wasn’t there. I told Rai Singhji I couldn’t put up there without basic safety or privacy.
We went back to old woman and woke her again. She groaned again.
Rai Singhji walked me to my new room. During small talk, he suddenly took out an orange from his pants and offered it to me. An orange! How did that get in there? No, thanks.
I told Rai Singhji to excuse me as it was time for bed. As I was closing the door behind him, I saw it – snow-capped mountains, glowing in moonlight.I went to the bathroom leaving the door open. The light didn’t work (of course it didn’t.) Standing there in the bathroom, barely lit with the light coming from the room, I saw the strangest and most calming sight I've seen – a butterfly, dead, floating in the toilet bowl.
Woke next morning with a high fever and an unlocked mind.
