My Scholarship entry - Giving back on the road

Twas the third time that I had left the home country, and found myself near Moraitika in Corfu, Greece accompanied by high-school friends and loads of freedom. After 2 days of pool and sea side - ness, I finally found my crew and set off on a small bike extravaganza through pine woods, Ionic sea views and crickety-creek sounds coming from those little summer insects hidden in the scorched vegetation. The first 10 km where in the wrong, Northern mountainous direction, so in essence we set off already fed up and tired. Once on track, we sped through tight, steep villages searching for a secluded beach to cater to our snorkelling needs. But, as adolescence would have it, one of us decided to have an accident, and what a spectacular one it was. From the base of the hill where we’ve stopped to wait for him, the last guy in the pack showed us his back wheel first and how his hands could glide along the sun glaring asphalt surface. He was alright, provided his open chin and hand injuries didn’t get infected. But the other kind of traveller’s luck was about to strike again: a car pulled over, and the nicest Greek Islander came to the rescue. He took our friend to the nearest hospital in Lefkimi, and soon after the Samaritan abduction... friendship got the best of us and decided to follow him there. Another 25km or so further down South the rest of us went, this time on wide asphalt and consistently near Paradise beaches, all right hand side. Long story short, on the way back, he began the injure scabbing process by soaking in the warm waters of Marathias beach in Southern Corfu, or Santa Barbara beach for the more Greek impaired. This secluded beach was not mentioned to our parents when they were convinced to let us come, and neither to us. Is was an all Greek secret, filled with traditional and also quite cheap Tavernas packed with the most pleasing tastes of the Mediterranean. It was the kind of food that makes your saliva glands act out like a King cobra when attacked.
