"Noe! Noe! wake up its time to go line up for bread" my granny woke me up ,l struggled to get up after all it was only 2 am in the morning. l hated getting up so early to line up for bread, but l knew l was the only one the family depended on because my grandfather was ill and my granny suffered from severe arthritis and my many cousins were all too young.
Growing up in Bulawayo,Zimbabwe was not too easy, the poverty and on top of that the economy deteriorating was making it even harder to survive. l remember this day as l lined up for bread like it was yesterday, my head just dazed into space and wondered what my life would be like,l remember staring into the sky and seeing a airplane and just thinking l wish l was in that plane, l knew l wanted to see the world but had no funds for it. My mom was dead and my father had taken off to Canada with his family and my life was heading no way ,but it wouldn't hurt to dream. How l would pray for a change in my life every single day.
One day l received a call from my dad saying he was going to sponsor me to Canada and he told me once l got to Canada l was on my own. l was so happy l didn't care if l would be a maid or janitor as long as l was in Canada. Finally the day came for me to leave for Canada it wasn't easy to leave my family behind but l knew bigger things and bigger opportunities were ahead of me.
l finally arrived in Canada and this was the best day of my life. l worked so hard sent money back home to my grandparents and put myself through school. It was tough but l knew l was blessed because l had the opportunities to prosper and make my dreams come true.
Living in Toronto for the past 15 years has really opened my eyes and just given me the drive to learn about peoples cultures. Toronto, Canada being a very diverse city you see people from all over the world ,l have become friends with people from countries l only heard of only in books. That has given me the drive to learn more about people. Once l graduated from College l told myself that l would travel to one country a year and before l travel l would do my researches and all so l had a bit of knowledge about the place l was going too.
l can only smile and be thankful that hopeful little girl who stared into the sky looking at an airplane whilst lining up for bread is finally living up to her dream. That is why l will never forget the day that l realized that dream do come true if work hard and are focused.
