The Old City

The lotus flower is the national flower of India.  Here it is being sold in the markets of the Old City of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat in western India. The lotus flower is in many ways emblematic of ancient Indian mythology and symbolises purity despite growing in unclean conditions. The language barrier does not disguise the optimistic spirit of the Indian culture epitomised by the lotus.
