Getting lost in time and space

The sun rises on the other side

A few summers ago my two best friends and I went for a road trip around Corsica.
One day we were traveling north along the Western coast, trying to get to the next town, Piana, before the sunset so that we could set up the tent while actually seeing what we were doing. All at the sudden, the sky turned red together with the cliffs, and the road started winding like a snake along the coast. It felt like driving along a canyon, for the road is carved in the red coastline and the rocks take surrealistic shapes on both sides. And beyond the cliffs, the sea, deep blue, and the sun slowly disappearing behind it. We were driving through the Calanche Cliffs without even knowing it! It was such a breathtaking view. The cliffs had turned all shades of orange, yellow and red, together with the sky. It felt like driving through fire. We were so excited, wishing we had a couple of bottles, some snacks and the time to just lay down and enjoy the show.
Then the brilliant idea: why don't we come back tomorrow morning and enjoy the break of dawn? Yes! We all agreed and thought it was a fantastic idea. So we kept driving, reached a campsite, set up the tent on probably the most uncomfortable lot of the whole place, bought 3 bottles of wine and half a chicken. Above all the three bottles of wine confirmed that driving back to the cliffs at 6 am was a fantastic idea, and so we lived up to our promise to go back to the Calanche to enjoy the sunrise.
Still a bit asleep we drove back to the cliffs and patiently waited. And waited. And waited. Slowly, the day broke. Without special effects, no cliffs on fire, no sky of red. And there it was, the scientific evidence. Like Newton being hit by the apple. Like traveling to India but reaching America. Right there, on the Calanche cliffs at 6 am, it was clear to us that the sun rises on the other side.
So, fellow travelers, this story should teach you a couple things: never miss a sunset because you are in a hurry to reach the campsite - you will end up getting the most uncomfortable spot anyway. When traveling, enjoy nature as if it was a kind of magic, but never forget the scientific truths. And lastly, if you live something at its best, never come back to have some more, unless you are prepared to be sorely disappointed.
