The day I will never forget

CROATIA | Thursday, 1 May 2014 | Views [174] | Scholarship Entry

On September 11th 2001, when two planes striked WTC in New York City, I was miles away in Korcula Island, a small island in the middle of Mediterranian Sea. I was in a study group from University of Auckland, and we were in the middle of the Marco Polo ruin when someone ran around the village and told us the news. There were only 2 internet cafes in the entire island, so understandably everyone flocked to the little spaces and we all ended up reading the news together. But words and pictures could not really depict the scale of the disaster. It would be weeks later, after I arrived back in Auckland and finally had access to TV, that I realised how bad it was. I guessed being in an almost heaven-like island had a part in not realising the seriousness of the disaster. Until now, I still had mix feeling when thinking back to that day. Korcula island holds a special place in my heart, it is such a lovely, beautiful and peaceful island. The people were very friendly, so contrast with the events unfolding elsewhere in the world. I don't really remember much of the following days apart from we were continuing with our study trip and did not really discuss much of the events, especially with our lack of information. I remembered us worrying about our trip back to Auckland, because we heard rumours that USA wanted to retaliate to whomever they blamed for the event. But I guess the reality is, life goes on, no matter what happen, and we could only wish such thing will never ever happen again.
