Depression, unemployment, financial hardship, mental illness and loneliness. If you suffered from any of these things, you may feel that you have a right to complain and look harshly on life. But the people who visit Cornerstone Contact Centre in Dandenong, do nothing of the sort.
For 17 years Cornerstone has opened its arms to those on the fringes of society, curing both hunger and loneliness within its walls. Cornerstone itself is nothing more than an old disused hall. It is the people who visit this hall, along with the wonderful volunteers that make Cornerstone what it is.
Over the past few months I have been documenting life at the Cornerstone Contact Centre. From the very first time I walked through the old woodern doors of Cornerstone, I felt inspired to highlight the problems in society, to often left unseen. My aim for this work is to hopefully give the general community a greater incite into this mostly hidden way of life.
The images and emotions captured here will be compiled into a multimedia package for my final year folio at Photography Studies College in Melbourne, where I am currently completing a major in Photojournalism. I also am planning to hold an Exhibition in the new year, with all proceeds going back to Cornerstone.
I believe I should be chosen for the Travel Photography Scholarship 2010 to Bhutan because, people and places are my passion. I connect with people in such a way, that they open up to me, showing there true selves and allowing me to capture that rare moment of truth. I Immerse myself into every new project with boundless dedication and passion. And although I finish my studies at the end of the year, I am very hungry to keep learning. Enjoying the amazing experience's found through the medium of photography.
