My Scholarship entry - Rosa Maria of Uros, Lake Titicaca, Peru

A year ago I bought my first digital camera and taught myself how to use it. I needed to translate the way I saw the world, and imagery felt like the most authentic medium. This manifested itself in amateur street photography and citizen photojournalism.
Capturing people in fleeting moments or in less than ideal circumstances, using photography as a tool to spread awareness and knowledge of different cultures and different ways of living feels natural to me. I attend various events, community gatherings, and walk through areas looking for beauty in places that people would normally dismiss. Sometimes I talk to people and take portraits, other times I stand back, unseen, to capture flashes of activity without disturbing the scene. When I travel I want to experience the way of the region and share its beauty and its failings with honesty and perspective.
Since falling in love with the language of photography I have wanted a career in photojournalism so this is the perfect opportunity to learn from someone who has that experience and is willing to share it. i want to travel the world telling its stories through my images more than i want anything else, so here i am.
