My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I have went to the fair since I was a child. Moving away to college and making a new home for myself has left me feeling rootless. I made a trip to the Mountain State Fair in Western North Carolina to try to bring back some of those old roots. I was always enthralled with the food and the livestock. Growing up in East Tennessee both of those things were a part of my childhood, and living in Appalachia I find they are still a big part of life here. These photos are original, non-manipulated 35mm slide prints taken with my Canon AE-1. These are some shots that have given me some new roots with new memories in my Asheville home.
During my last two years of undergraduate education I became deeply involved in photography. I made a decision that this is what I want to do, and I'm determined to achieve my goal. I'm looking into going back to school to study photography. I have so much more to learn, and I believe that this opportunity will help and encourage me on that long, yet exciting, path of knowledge. I'm hoping to gain some professional photography experience as well as familiarize myself with more digital work. Helmut Gernsheim said that photography links the family of man. That is it Independent of political influence and it reflects truthfully life and events. It allows us to share in the hopes and despair of others, and illuminates political and social conditions. I want to learn to be an eye-witness of humanity through the lens. I'd like the opportunity to learn from, and help a great photographer in the field.
