My Scholarship entry - Solace in solitude

I'm a 32-year-old Australian, originally from Devonport, Tasmania. After my father's unexpected death in 2012, I quit my job as an advertising copywriter, sold a bunch of stuff and took off on a trip through the subcontinent, north Africa and eastern Europe. Although I've always had a keen interest in storytelling, photography and the moving image, it wasn't until I undertook this trip that I appreciated just how much satisfaction and enjoyment I get out of trying to capture a moment from a unique and interesting perspective. After spending much of 2013 on the move, I now live in London and am again working as a freelance copywriter (which allows me more freedom to travel and pursuing other interests). And though I think I have a reasonable eye, and I really enjoy the challenge of telling a story through photographs rather than the words I use at work, I'll be the first to admit that my technical knowledge of photography is fairly basic. So I think this scholarship would provide an incredible opportunity for me to learn from Jason, who I see as a real photographer's photographer. I always admire those who see technology as a tool rather than a crutch when it comes to their craft.
