Indigenous tribes in Sapa

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos

The following photos are a series of portraits which show the indigenous tribes of South East Asia . As technology is booming and growing rapidly around us, there are many indigenous tribes who still live by their traditional ways. In particular Sapa which is situated in Northern Vietnam hosts a variety of people from a variety of ethnical groups. I wanted to capture the beauty and traditional customs of the people that I met along my travels, as I felt overwhelmed by their beauty and humbleness. As we get lost in the world of technology and modern times, I feel its important to keep traditions alive, traditions which should be passed down to future generations. By photographing the locals as I saw them made me feel that I was keeping their traditions alive by being involved with them for the time I was with them.

My ability to adapt comes easy to me and I can make my home away from home simple. Australian born I have lived out of Australia for the past fourteen years and through my experiences in life I have grown to understand and comprehend diverse situations to an extent. I am forever learning something each day and thrive on being involved in new experiences. The national geographic magazine was where I first started to travel, absorbed amongst the colourful pages of photographs and articles; I became intrigued with the world and it was then I had to go see the world for myself.

Many people are unable to travel due to sickness, fear of the unknown, family commitments and various other scenarios. I feel the utmost joy in sharing my visions of the world to them and it gives me great pleasure in seeing their fascination of the world that is foreign to them.
