My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

My love of photos came upon me before my passion for photography. As a child, my favourite items on our family bookshelf were the photo albums. The way a photo, just by looking at it, can make you dream up a story or recall an old one is what I love the most.

My serious passion for photography began 2 years ago when I decided to buy a DSLR before I left for a trip to Philippines, Thailand and India. I started the trip taking more bad shots than good. Gradually though I noticed my photos my were being exposed better even though I still did not fully understand the concept of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I think the technique I did learn the most during that time was composition and the ability to capture a “story” in a single shot.

The photos I have selected in this application were taken during my time in India. Although I do not believe they are my finest photos in terms of technique, I do believe they have captured a “story“. The subjects in these photos are from regional parts of India, many of whom have never engaged in conversation with a western foreigner. I feel privileged to have experienced meeting them and even had the chance to take their photos.

Spending time in a developing country context when I was younger together with independent travel has enabled me to understand culture and sociaI constructs in a variety of different ways and it is the ability of photography to capture this that I have tried to demonstrate in this photo series. My photos aim to capture seeing without stigma and aim to invite the viewer to form an intimate experience with the subject. I hope to use photography as a medium to capture and share life, memories and experience and would relish the opportunity to work alongside an esteemed photographer in such a beautiful setting.
