Lombok is a very small island, it only took a 6 hours to drive around. Yet, Lombok has at least 3 ethnics, strongly influencing its cultural life. Sasak people is Lombok's first descendants on this island, they are mostly Moslems and live all parts of the island. Balinese Hindus are next to fill in the percentages, they occupied several parts of the island, west and the main city area. Chinese are the fewest, concentrating in the city's main business area. Let's get to know Lombok's culture through foods.

Start feeling this island's well-blended cultures from its traditional markets. From 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. is the morning market's busiest hours.Housewives and shoppers eager to seek the freshest and cheapest fish possible. Fresh, green, leafy kangkung is the best seller among other exotic local vegetables and fruits. Ready to eat delicacies are also available for those to enjoy with the morning tea and coffee. Just stroll around the outer market, that if you don't want your shoes got muddy and dirty.

Prepared for a cultural brunch? Just spot the Sasak traditional houses all over the island, bet they are busy handling local customers for their halal and spicy cooking. Either Nasi Kuning (Yellowish Nasi Lemak) or Nasi Puyung-rice with spicy chicken. Rojak and Plecing Kangkung are best companion to complete the meal. Taliwang chicken are local's famous dish, sold from markets, streets, and restaurants. Next, stroll around the corner of Hindus villages,where Balinese gate houses stands out. Balinese women are giving their friendly smile and ready to feed you with freshly grilled Fish Satay. It'll be ready within minutes away. Not to mention the famous Balinese Rice with all complete condiments.
Chinese opens restaurant in town or at the beach for a relaxed sunset moment the beach. They also eager to feed you with their specialties of seafood and of course, noodles! Not to eager with spicy food? This is your best options.
