My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Spain | Monday, December 3, 2012 | 5 photos

The most rewarding travels begin with a search for something that's never quite found. My first trip to Europe was unsettling. For years I consumed info on other countries, and as a result, after more than six weeks in Spain I felt, in some respects, unsurprised by what I had seen.
I travel to see beautiful things and meet beautiful people, and for a last chance at being a child.
Two years ago, when my father passed away suddenly, I traveled to Cambodia to escape. I traveled to Laos both to lose myself and to find myself. In travel, I can be anyone. I found myself more open and willing to accept my discomforts as impermanent and isolated. I try always to say yes, and to bask in the rush of the impending unknown. I love what Camus wrote that what gives value to travel is fear-an interruption in other words, or emancipation from circumstances and all the habits we hide behind when at home. I can contemplate how I will return changed, and how I will change those I crossed. Travel guides me towards a better balance of knowledge and empathy, and I am eager to encourage people, through my photos, to gain experience through travel.
