The first time I appreciated the true treasure of Barbados was looking at a friend’s travel photos. In the image she backed the camera which went over her shoulder and displayed an untold acreage of trees which halted at a heavenly line of white and the blue sea. The cliff she stood on seemed to be overlooking a well preserved forest and I had to learn more about this exotic destination. I was shocked to learn the cost of this view was one bus ride. It was Hackleton’s Cliff, St. Joseph, Barbados. The folklore of the destination tells a tale of ordinary people but it was the view that started my journey of sharing these ordinary treasures with the world. I was concerned for my friend’s safety at the edge of the cliff as I was falling in love with Paradise.
Since then, I have stood on and written about other vantage points of our island. Reviewing the popular ones and exposing the not so popular is a thrill in itself that is fuelled by the experience of being there. Pirates of the Caribbean would be all the more momentous if it was filmed in the bay a few metres from Harry Smith Great House in St. Philip. When the area is unkept, the grass grows thing and golden and the cliff is decorated with coconut trees. The salty air blows across the pasture makes the journey all the more worthwhile but standing at the edge of the cliff is the prize. Leaning against a coconut tree or sitting on a suitable rock formation, the crystal blue waters show their majesty as the crash against the limestone underneath your feet. In its wake, the foam dissipates to reveal crustaceans and other creatures who make their home on the side of the rocks. Along these miles of cliff they are areas for a host of activities including fishing, photography or a family picnic.
A destination is always two fold; it is the physical journey which in Barbados is always beautiful but the untold occasion is the internal destination which reveals the beauty in you. So to all who have never seen it Paradise is a phone call away and the number starts with 1-246.
