Some of the workers have just finished to load a “pinisi” with gypsum, which going through the direction of the Surabaya harbor. All of the hooded workers which are covered with the whit dust of the gypsum are looking like the crew of a ghost ship.

Workers are often using the turbid canal which comes from the Ciliwung River(Turbid water river)and flows into the sea, for moving from one ship to another for trasfering the stocks and the workers.
During the navigation it’s usual to see the maintenance work of these old wood ships called “pinisi” in Bahasa, directly on the little platforms on the water.

The ex mariner Hasyim, like a modern Caronte of Dante’s Divina Commedia, is now working as accompany for workers from a ship to another.
He took me for a trip in the canal for showing me proudly the working process.
