Understanding a Culture through Food - None of Authentic Food

INDONESIA | Friday, 19 April 2013 | Views [272] | Scholarship Entry

New culinary experience is one of the most favorite experience which I’d like to have every time I went to a new place. Just like Mark Kulansky, An American Journalist said that “Food is a central activity of mankind and one of the single most significant trademarks of culture”. Therefore at this moment, I’m really excited to taste Singaporean Authentic Food’s.

First, I went to Little India which is one of famous district in Singapore. I wandered around, and found many Indian people gathered, socialized. Passed an Indian restaurant and I could smell the Indian Curry. I asked people where I can found the Singapore Authentic Food

Then I go to China Town, I saw roast duck showed in front of the restaurants. . I wandered around, tried to looking for something different and unfortunately couldn’t found any Singaporean Food.

I started giving up and coming back to a hotel when I found a place named Kopi Tiam. I came to one restaurant that looks a bit different and asked “Excuse me, Can I have Singaporean Authentic Food”. The server said “I suggest you to try Singaporean Laksa”.
I tasted the food, and realized that it has the same taste like Laksa in Indonesia or Malaysia. So why they called it Singaporean Laksa ?
But then, I remembered dialogs between me and my friends when we just arrived at Singapore. She said “You know what? Singapore doesn’t have any specific culture. This country is a melting pot, where there are multi racial people like Indian, Chinese also Malay.”
It that time, I realized one thing, it’s true that Singapore don’t have any authentic culture or authentic food. But culture it’s not always about what we have or what we haven’t. Culture is how we really appreciate and maximize what given around us...
