My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Italy | Sunday, January 13, 2013 | 5 photos

This is Casale di Pignone (La Spezia_Italy) few days after the flood of the 25th of October 2011: lacerated and brought to its knees by Nature.
As Casale, Brugnato, Borghetto, Cinque Terre and several villages surrounding La Spezia were devastated.
A lot of volunteers came to help and I was among them, with my Olympus OM2 around my neck and a black and white roll (kodak 400TX).
Many hours passed before I took a single picture.
Also photography seemed useless to me.
Everything.
Everything except the shovel I had in my hand.
Then I thought about them: the people of Casale, stripped of everything but their memory.
I started to take pictures, timorous, asking myself constantly if it was right doing that in front of this nightmare that everybody wanted to forget as soon as possible.
I still conserve that b&w roll cautiously because I think it's a piece of that memory that frightens but must be remembered, not only by words.
I'm Livia, 26 years old student, attending the camera class at Zelig- School of documentary of Bolzano.
In my head a lot of questions about photography, its complexity and humanity.
On my foot a pair of shoes to walk far away...
