There is so much activity going on in the world and our lives today. It feels as though we simply lose touch with our true realities and ourselves. Simple miraculous events that happen every day that we seem to look at with distant eyes and turn away back to focus on our own madness.
Growing up on a dirt road on the outskirts of Uxbridge, Ontario, my two brothers and I had the opportunity to spend countless hours outside. Across the street there was a 200ft lane for farmers to access their fields. At the end of the lane I spent many evenings capturing the grand sunsets that would flood the sky with emotion. At the time I did not see meaning behind trying to capture the beauty of the world on film. I would spend countless hours taking pictures of sunsets, eventually landscapes and different elements of nature. Perhaps a touch of selfishness was in me, thinking I’m not only going to not miss witnessing the beauty in our world with my eyes, but I am going to take a picture and admire it later as well.
We are excited for fireworks, for preplanned beauty whether natural or unnatural, but what about the everyday beauty. The thought was evoked, how could I inspire others to fully witness and appreciate the beauty that is happening all around them every day. By winning this competition I would have the opportunity to share the beauty of this world with others. Perhaps motivate them to help make changes in their lives, to look more into nature, the depths of the forest and the emotion of the sunset.
