My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - My Big Adventure

My brother and I walk outside of the airport with our 20 kilo backpacks each. We look at each other and smile awkwardly thinking what to do next as the reality of our pending trip dawns in. The goal was to travel New Zealand from Auckland to Dunedin seeing as many Lord of the Rings filming spots as possible. This coupled with a $20 a day budget meant taxi's and even backpackers were out of the question. How we proposed to travel was as cheaply as possible regardless how it was. In true adventurous spirit we tightened our back straps and walked straight to the supermarket for our first lot of provisions. It didn't take us long to get picked up by a nice Christian Lady who drove us to the next town south of the airport. We very quickly realized that we could repeat our good fortunes. Without trying very hard at all we had moved South visiting the trout fishing capital of Taopo, the windy city of Wellington and all by the age old art of hitch hiking. With minimum effort and many a kind Kiwi, we had travelled the whole North Island on someone else’s petrol and even had mcdonalds bought for us too! After a brief Ferry ride, we were on the infamous wild, rugged, and beautiful South island.
