Reflection of Troubles

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Wednesday, August 18, 2010 | 4 photos

Author Marc Mulholland has stated, "Northern Ireland’s tragedy is that its people have not been able to agree upon a common identity." Throughout many years of strife and struggle in Northern Ireland, countless have suffered immensely. Age old conflicts have not only torn apart families, neighbors, and friends, but have also deepened the dispute between two very different religious and political communities; the Protestant Unionists, and the Catholic Nationalists. Though these events occurred years ago and many efforts have been made for a mutual understanding and peace, their effects are still visible in the hearts and minds of both Catholic and Protestant men and women throughout Eire. These photos reflect a trip to Northern Ireland in 2007, where I had the opportunity to experience wonderful people and a wonderful culture, with a sorted past. The photos are intended to provide a brief look into the troubles of the past and then demonstrate hope for the future of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

My name is Megan, I am twenty-three years old and a graduate student studying elementary school counseling. I am an amateur photographer who enjoys seeing and photographing beauty in the world. The words of Irish poet Oscar Wilde resonate in my life, “Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.” I love travel, I love learning, and I love experiencing life. I would love this opportunity to work with the National Geographic Channel and Jason Edwards in the Kingdom of Bhutan, which could be an eye-opening and life-changing experience. Thank You.
