Meredith & Tory in Mongolia

About mongolia2013

It all began last year when we were watching the film The Horse Boy where a couple takes their 6 year old autistic son to Mongolia to be treated by riding horses and healing shaman. Tory, the non-traveler, said, "now I'd go there." Say no more, we were off, as Meredith booked a trip with the same outfitter The Horse Boy used, Tulga of Nomadic Trails.

Needless to say, Tulga was a rare gem and we enjoyed Nomadic Trails. It was the trip of a lifetime as we rode the small tough Mongolian horses across the steppe of Chinghis Kahn fame. We met wonderful Mongolians and saw them compete in mini-Nadaams and horse races. They are a friendly culture who invited us in to their simple, but elegant ger (yurt) on arrival. We were captivated at once, but smitten with the Dukha Reindeer herders we encountered in the mountains near the Russian border. Living as primitive people of the mountains, these hunters and herders migrate through the centuries it seems. Riding into their tipi camp was like encountering a Crow village on the plains of the West. We were at home with these beautiful people.

We were fortunate to see and hear the haunting music of the Tuvan Throat Singers soon after our return to Wyoming. So, it should come as no surprise that after giving our photojournal presentation several times, we looked at each other and said, "We should go back to Mongolia again next year." After all, we had not seen the Gobi Desert or the High Altai and everything in between. We contacted Tulga and asked him to book us another trip in 2013. This is the journal of that trip.
