Harsh and unusual punishment for the legs and feet, so went Day 2. Walked to the Auckland Art Gallery, not far from my hotel. Had a lovely pancake in the adjacent cafe while waiting for it to open. It's a small gallery with representative NZ artists. An American has just loaned some classics to the gallery - so there was a small exhibit with Picasso, Matisse, Braques, etc. Then to the Victoria Park Market, a has been with a few shops, mostly selling souvenirs. Bought a refrigerator magnet and headed back up to harbor via the Auckland fish market. Nice gourmet grocery, few to go deli counters and a few large bins of fish frozen on ice. Then to the ferry terminal to go to the North Shore to see Devonport. Picked up some walking tour brochures (a means to continue the torture mentioned above.} I ended up climbing up North Head, one of two volcanos there. This one was turned into a fort with cannons and tunnels to protect Auckland Harbor After climbing all the way to the top to a theater in a little stone building, I saw a film about the fort's history, then hiked down and walked on Cheltenham Beach. Who knew all the cafes would stop serving food by 3:30 when I was done walking and hungry. Found one with some sandwiches to go, and chatted with a couple from Vancouver I had met earlier on the walk. Then back on the ferry to Auckland, canneloni for dinner, and back to the hotel for a good rest.
