My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 3 photos

When I became interested in photography, I was 19 and saved up for months to buy my own point and shoot. Four years later, I am out of college at the age of 22, and looking for a job- little did I know at 19, that photography would become my passion! I gradually saved up to purchase a DSLR, and that's when my hobby became my life! My camera has been at my side ever since, and photography has become an amazing process of technical learning as well as personal growth.

In terms of a shooting style, I know "moments" are my favorite things to capture. To me, moments are more than just pictures of the scene in front of me. They are snapshots of people, objects, and scenery engaged in an intimate moment of understanding and beauty which exists for a moment, and then is gone. Moments are the foundation of good storytelling- they capture emotion, energy, conflict, and depth all in one frame at the same time. They take a good eye as well as patience. I love the feeling when a good eye and patience pay off and result in the "perfect" shot- that is one of the best feelings in the world.

This World Nomads Photography Scholarship is more than an amazing trip to Bhutan for me- I believe it is an invaluable opportunity that allows me to be mentored by Jason Edwards in a real life setting where I can learn tips, techniques, wisdom, and insight that cannot be taught in a classroom environment. I look forward to being considered for this privilege to learn from an esteemed National Geographic photographer like Jason and hope to one day follow in those footsteps and pursue a career in photojournalism.
