In Holland national cuisine is absent, but there is great abundance of traditional products which you had to try there to understand what they mean saying “passion for pleasure”.
Cheese, herring, beer, waffles and wide choice of fruits - some of them are not native Dutch, but they can be called national, as they are so popular. The most attractive phenomenon is Dutch herring. It’s entire culture, because Netherlands is the sea side country. There’s even a special holiday, when The Queen is trying the herring of a new season. Herring in Holland is a kind of fast food, so it is better to buy it on the street, on the market or in a tourist spot where is the tray with herring is sure to be. Soft, fresh, salted, with onion, oily or like sandwich – it tasty in any form!
The founders of chees fashion were, are and will be France and Italy. It’s really strange, but Dutch Gouda is something special in terms of taste, because the homeland of Gouda is here. Worth trying taste is a hard cheese with cumin. This is typical Dutch stuff. The idea of adding spices to the chees has gone from the days when ships with eastern spices arrived in Dutch ports to meet Europe demand in spices. I simply love “Oude Amsterdam” (“Old Amsterdam”) – truly hallmark of Holland cheese. It’s really delicious!
I was surprised by recipes of drinks, which Dutch people make with fruits. Belgians fry them, Germans marinate, English boil, and Dutch crumple into puree. You can find mashed fruit with mint, honey, cereals or ice in any supermarket.
