My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

The Royal Queensland Show or the Brisbane Ekka is a time of year that attracts well over half a million people to celebrate, educate and get involved with Australian agriculture and industrial exhibits.

As part of my photography tuition this year, one of my assignments was to capture an event from start to finish. Naturally, having a love of animals and documenting people in an environment, the Brisbane Ekka was a must do for me.

I have an immense love of nature and wildlife and have always dreamed of having a career that would involve animals and nature and exploring these throughout the world. National Geographic Wild has been a huge inspiration for me and my dream would be to follow in those footsteps and document animal behaviour and also create awareness to the world about endangered species and also have an impact on reducing animal cruelty.

I started photography as a hobby in 2010, but then decided to study photography full time at the start of 2011. I’ve been pushed to limits I didn’t think I would think possible and I’ve loved every moment of it and have yearned for each next morning when I can capture my next ‘perfect shot’. I’ve been taught the traditional methods of using film and processing my own prints in the dark room which is something I would love to continue as I’m a firm believer of trying to capture the moment in the camera rather than on computer.

To be mentored by Jason while taking photos of wildlife in South Africa couldn’t get any closer to my perfect dream come true. I believe I would make an exceptional contribution to the scholarship and use every single skill and moment captured to maximise my direction of a career in wildlife photography.
