My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - My Big Adventure

Delving into the unknown - Turkey in this case - is an exciting, enticing and irresistible offer.

A city, a country, a continent, so different and so far, with opportunity for discovery is a dream I dare visualise. Breaking through new languages, new terrain and territories, and adopting cultures is a challenge to be faced slowly, carefully and embraced moment by moment.

What can this offer? Opening of the mind, change of the heart’s desires, and even life changing opportunities with new people. Most of all, it will offer a new vision to different people, it will offer opportunity to learn from one of the best, thus continue giving the world Turkey’s best.

This change, any change, from the norm, provides sufficient breathers along life’s road. Worthwhile pit stops that get one back on track to passions shelved away. All of a sudden, they come to life, wholesomely and possibly at the right time in life. Embracing this change is not a choice. It’s a destiny.

Turkey, what can be expected of you? Culture shocks, language barriers, racism even, if one thinks of the worst; but that’s only on the surface. Searching deeper would probably reveal not only a beautiful country, but certainly people with history, and pride in their strides from the past, with every road traversed spanning tales from times gone by… what a wonder!

Situated smack in the middle of two continents, Turkey makes for the ultimate Eurasian experience. A mix of typical Middle East represented by Iran and Iraq; and a lovely hint of Europe, represented by Greece, surround the country, giving a recipe for great diversity: culturally, religiously, not to mention politically.

At the mention of Turkey, one cannot fail to imagine its picturesque sceneries alongside the many coastlines. Beautiful views that take up miles of land around the north, south and west, providing laid back and enchanting atmospheres.

Having only paper knowledge of Turkey, an experience to traverse Istanbul, its third largest city, with a mentor to guide this path would go a long way, in changing a young African girl’s life and outlook to life. It’s a chance not to miss, and proper occasion to glimpse into what Africa has to offer.
