Travels in the life of Laila

Where I'm going

UNITED KINGDOM | Sunday, 26 August 2007 | Views [613]

For those of you who want to make yourselves sick with envy :-) or just want to know where I'll be over the next 3 months...here is what I will be doing.

I leave rainy London on Sunday 26th August at 10pm and fly via Dubai to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. I'll be in Dar for 2 weeks, staying with family and getting used to life in Africa.

The name of my blog is significant...because in Dar I will be working with a friend who is starting an events company. She is currently working on....the Miss Tanzania contest! So I will report back soon with tales of leggy African Queens and catty backstage fights over who is saving the world in the best swimsuit. Should be interesting!

Anyway, I digress. On the 9th September I fly to Kampala in Uganda and my trip with Dragoman starts on Monday 10th September, leaving from Kampala.

The trip is 4 1/2 weeks, travelling round East Africa in a truck with a group of 21 people. They are from all over the world, Kiwis, Canadians, Americans and some Brits.

The trip route and details can be viewed here..

For the lazy ones among you, the trip covers:

Nights 1-2 (approx Sep 10/11): Uganda:

  • 1 night stay at the stunning remote Lake Bunyonyi

Nights 3-5 (Sep 12-14): Rwanda:

  • 3 day visit to the forests and mountains of Northern Rwanda
  • Mountain gorilla trek in Rwanda's Volcano NP

Nights 6-11 (Sep 15-20): Uganda & Lake Victoria:

  • Big game safari in QEII NP including boat trip on Kazinga Channel
  • 3 night stay on the banks of the White Nile at Jinja
  • Hands on help at a Soft Power Community Project at Jinja
  • View the project here at www.softpowereducation.com

Nights 12-15 (Sep 21-24): Kenya:

  • Wildlife safari in Masai Mara and stunning camp on edge of the park

The trip is made up of 2 sections, so some people will leave us here, and new people will join. This princess will carry on camping and do the second part of the trip...

Nights 1-3 (Sep 25-27): Kenya:

  • Hands on work at a Kariandusi School Trust Project
  • Visit to Elsamere Born Free foundation at Lake Naivasha

Nights 4-5 (Sep 28/29): Kenya:

  • Safari in Lake Nakuru NP, excellent for rhino
  • Kenyan colonial farm visit

Nights 6-9 (Sep 30- Oct 3): Tanzania:

  • 2 day overland and wildcamp in Serengeti NP
  • Jeep safari in Ngorongoro crater Reserve

Nights 10-11 (Oct 4-5): Tanzania:

  • Visit to an African snake park
  • Camel trip and traditional Masai village visit

Nights 12-16 (Oct 6-10): Tanzanian Coast & Zanzibar:

  • 2 nights on idyllic Indian Ocean beaches
  • 3 nights on the tropical island of Zanzibar
  • Guided tour of Spice Plantations and local lunch

From here the trip finishes in Dar. I am then in Dar for 5 weeks - hopefully working with my friend to build up her event business, and get involved in some voluntary work too. My plans for this bit are a little vague so let's see what works out.

I leave Dar on the 15th November and stop in Dubai for a few days, from the 15th-20th, heading back to London on the 20th November.

So now you know where I am, if you fancy a holiday to Dar, Zanzibar or Dubai....you know when to visit!
