My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Haiti | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos
I am an architect with an interest in photography. Over the past several years my practice has shifted to focus on architectural education and community led post disaster relief. Photography provides an opportunity to document my experiences; to share the human side of disasters and reveal in its absence, how much we depend on architecture as communities and individuals to define our culture and ourselves. I present my photographs to raise funds used to take architecture students into areas affected by disasters where they learn design and construction working directly with people in need. In November of 2011, I took six students from Auckland, New Zealand to Haiti to work with Architecture for Humanity. Students spent 6 weeks working within communities affected by the 2010 earthquake that killed over 300 thousand people and displaced over 1 million. Images like these from Haiti and other humanitarian efforts have helped to raise over 8,000 dollars. Working alongside Jason Edwards and learning from his vast experience will improve my own photography and allow me to continue working with students, improving post disaster conditions, and sharing these experiences with others.
