Getting away

Going away isn't something that I really do. Reading, thinking, learning has taken up most of my time. My youngest daughter made an off the cuff comment to me a while back - she said "People don't understand: You don't do holidays".

This statment has come back to me time and time again. She's right. Going somewhere just to sit and close my eyes has never been of any interest to me. I have confused that with a disinterest in being away.

Well, I am about to leave for only a couple of weeks. This last semester has been really so busy. I haven't had time to read anything but the essentials. What I am looking forward to is the opportunity to sit quietly and think. Maybe I will take my book for the plane. Maybe I wont. Thinking has taken over  priority reading.

It isn't easy to get away. I have children who are foremost in my mind. Although older now, they still have their own things going on. I feel as if I am grabbing at time to make some space to think. There are things that I want to understand: about people that I meet, myself, my connections with others. Taking time away from the many things that I must do has been complex and like walking a very fine line between possible and not possible.

Yet now I am getting ready to catch that train before boarding the plane.
