My Scholarship entry - Seeing the world through other eyes

It's early in the morning and the sun is shining bright and happy while the cool air lightly brushes through my body. With closed eyes, I tilt my head and soak into the gracious source of light. I smile and breathe. "It's a good life", I think to myself. I open my eyes and I find myself in the middle of the sea.
Around me, mixes of green, brown and blue play side by side, creating the most spectacular view. The water below is clear, more than enough to get a glimpse of the life under: little fishes of all kinds, merrily swimming and playing around; corals of varying size and color, waving at you from beneath. You can see my cousin, not too far, enjoying the cold body of water as she makes splashes here and there. She is clearly in another world. I am sitting on the boat with only 'manong' as company. I look at him and catch him looking at me with great interest in his eyes. I smiled and asked why.
He answered my question with another one: What do you feel when you look into the water, to the skies above and the mountains around? I think long and hard. "I feel blessed to be able to see it.", I answered. He smiled and said, "Do you know what I feel whenever I'm here, in the middle of this great creation?" He did not wait for an answer but continued. "I feel alive. I look at these waters and I see my life play out before me. Here is where I grew up, where I work and where I would die, eventually. Those fishes are my friends and these mountains have been great witnesses to all the things that happened in my life. This," he motioned around everything in particular, "is my life." After a little while, I spoke. "You have a great and beautiful life.", I offered. We both smiled and he then he looked away, most probably lost in his own train of thoughts.
We made it back to land after a few minutes. Before leaving 'manong', I shook his hand and said thank you. He smiled and told my cousin and I to come back soon. I never quite look at the waters the same way again.
