Ganesh Ji's Visit

INDIA | Wednesday, 30 April 2014 | Views [87] | Scholarship Entry

I slipped my card into the electronic lock and forcefully pushed down on the handle. The door eased open and I stepped into a nippy room. Housekeeping had passed by and had courteously left the AC switched on. I was thankful to find relief from the sweltering 35 degrees Celsius in which I had spent the last couple of hours lying next to a pool with my earphones firmly secured in my ears.
I activated the light switch to reveal a neatly maintained bedroom. My towel, which I had dropped into a pile on the couch after my shower that morning, was nowhere to be seen. Instead, on the bed sat a beautifully crafted Ganesh staring back at me. I edged closer to inspect the figure and realized it was an assortment of towels rolled and folded and tucked to form this elegant replica of Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles in the Hindu faith.
After a few minutes of silently admiring the towel arrangement I stepped closer to find a scribbled note lying next to it. “Enjoy your great stay with us from Housekeeping Juze/Jaykrishna” it was signed off. I smiled stupidly at the note as I read it over and over as though it had been left by a lost lover. My day had been made. Several pictures and Instagram posts later I went to the door and stuck my head out looking left and right in the hope of spotting Juze or Jaykrishna dutifully walking through the passage way as many of the staff did. A few of the housekeeping men (barely, none of them looked older than 23) walked past my room and stared at me curiously as I squinted at their name badges. None of them were either Juze or Jaykrishna. Slightly dejected I returned to admire the masterpiece. It was the first time I had ever seen towels so creatively used.
I found Juze wandering the passages not too long after. He seemed startled but equally chuffed at how impressed I was with his masterpiece. “I show you?” he asked in his gentle, almost girlish voice. “Yes! Yes! Please do!” I exclaimed. My excitement had gotten the better of me. He dashed to the towel storage area and met me back at the room within a couple of minutes. I watched him in awe as he folded and explained, rolled and explained, tucked and explained to form another beautiful Ganesha figure before he sat it down on the bed and placed two rose petals for the eyes. “Ganesh Ji, you like Mam?” I smiled at him and nodded. I loved it.
