My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

I am currently on a year long adventure traveling around the world with my wife. I’ve witnessed the sun arc over the sky in fourteen different countries so far, lighting up new insights and stirring previously dormant sensibilities. One of them is photography as a means to convey a story.
Before I left, I was working in retail with a film/television background. I’m familiar with how powerful the moving image can be, but have not capitalized on its merits. Storytelling is in my blood, but finding the right medium to do it with is challenging.
I’ve decided to showcase three sunrises that I shot while in New Zealand. As a nature lover, the universal beauty that sunrises can produce is a call to action, a call to adventure. Each new day gives all of us a chance to evaluate our surroundings and decide what to do with the time that is given to us. Some people stay the course. Others change.
This photography scholarship would give me the opportunity to switch gears and try something I’ve never had the guts to pursue but have always had an interest in. Having been through six continents, mountains, deserts, tropics and oceans, I can honestly say that change is something that I’m now good at. Adaptation is second nature. I don’t just meet challenges, I pursue them with full stride.
I hope to learn more about what the still image has to offer and how best to capture the moment. The things that I know I will learn in Bhutan will be invaluable when it comes to telling the story of the world. It is this story that will bring people together and shed light on the things that unite us.
