My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Hello my name is Agata and I am a polish nomad living and studying in New Zealand. My fascination with photography began very early in my life and long before I even had my first camera. The fact that I grow up in a communist country, lived in a grey concrete block surrounded by more grey concrete blocks for 20 years developed an enormous curiosity to my surrounding world and most of all the world behind the iron curtain. However for many years National Geographic magazine was my only escape and my only window to the outside world and it became the way I have learned about photography. My determination grew stronger to fulfil my dreams and once I had the ability to leave my beloved Poland I spread my wings and begun my life as a voluntary migrant capturing people and beautiful places along my journey.
Over the years I have developed a passion for travel and environmental photography and I would like to use the scholarship as an opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge to create images that not only tell a story but also have a greater impact on people. I believe that this scholarship would be an eye opening experience and there are no words to describe how much it would mean to me to be mentored by National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards in such a inspiring place.
The images that I decided to share demonstrate what I love about photography the most: telling the story through honest and close interaction with people and the environment. During my dream trip to India it was the people who made my journey memorable and by sharing their emotions with me the spirit of the place became unforgettable.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Agata,
