My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

Last week, I finally had a chance to have lunch in a Korea restaurant near my campus. I ordered a bowl of Ramen Noodles. Well, I’m not sure it’s from Korea or Japan, but I often hear the stars on Korean dramas love to eat Ramen Noodles. So, I give it a try. As we know that Korean culture is very unique. The language, the letters, the food, the traditional cloth, the ceremony are just like their identity. It’s very cool knowing they still can safe their culture in this hi-tech digital world. The most unique thing is the one that you can find in food ceremony. Like tea ceremony. I also love the fact that they always arrange and serve the food beautifully. There were different spices, different flavors, and dishes that were very authentic to the culture in Korea. Just like in their dramas, entire families and multiple generations were sitting around the grills, in most cases the eldest woman was cooking, the other women were running back and forth to the buffet to gather the meat and vegetables, and the men were sitting together drinking and socializing. When the food was ready, the men served themselves and the women waited until the men were finished before starting their meal. I also found it interesting to see the generations come together and how the families interact during mealtimes. While I do not agree with the hierarchy in the Korean household, it was eye opening to see how the women and men all had different roles and different levels of respect for one another. It was unlike anything I have ever seen in my culture.
