In 1872, recognizing the difficulty of navigating near the Honey Island, the Brazilian emperor ordered the construction of the Shells Lighthouse (Farol das Conchas). This building was made with the finest Scottish technology, something rare and expensive for Brazil at that time. The lighthouse is located very near to the Enchanted Grotto.

As a matter of fact, the Honey Island is known as a difficult place to sail through. The fishermen of the island are the ones who best navigate in the area. In the past, many ships that needed to pass near the island used to call upon the Honey Island’s fishermen for help.

Even with all the technology, though, the Honey Island’s waters still are hard to sail through. This boat was abandoned by fishermen at the beach in front of the Enchanted Grotto, after almost being destructed at the ocean. They need to respect the sea. And the mermaids.
