My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My second home has always been Tuscaloosa, Alabama. My family owns a lake house there and we often go to visit family. When I most recently visited, I was shocked by the destruction the tornado had created in my town. At first I was upset seeing all the devastation and ruins scattered on the ground as memories of places that used to be. But there was still a beauty in those things left behind. These objects allowed for a small glimpse into the past with textures that tell their stories. That day, I gained a new appreciation for things that were weathered and worn. Not all things must be shiny or new to be considered beautiful, sometimes broken and weathered places have the most to share. While Tuscaloosa struggled to get back on its feet, I took a few snapshots of places and things I found around town that showed a glimpse of its history and story.
I would love to have this opportunity because I am a graphic design major still studying in college. While I have taken a few courses on photography, I will admit I am still an amateur and would love the hands on experience and guidance from a mentor that would improve my technique and technical skills. As a designer, I feel that I have a good eye for design, angles, and space, but to become a great photographer, need some extra help form a mentor from whom I can study and learn. I am in great physical shape from playing club soccer at college and competing at a very high level. I also would love to see the preschool development project mentioned because my current part time job is teaching art at a local preschool. If given this opportunity, I would put my heart and soul into every project (dedicating all hours necessary) and commit myself fully.
