My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Monday, October 18, 2010 | flickr photos

I was born in the transylvanian town Sibiu at the time when Romania was ruled by the communist dictatorship. Already as a child I wanted to travel and explore the world.
I was lucky and in 1989, while I was still at school, the regime was overthrown and I could finally follow my dreams and travel around, always followed by a camera.

Today I live in Denmark and this summer I went back to Sibiu to show my Danish boyfriend where I come from.
On one of the days we went to the main square, the Piata Mare. As a child I used to go to the Piata Mare together with
my grandfather to feed the pigeon and play at the fountain. While I was telling my boyfriend all these stories, I wanted to take a picture with one of the towers surrounding the square mirrored in the water of the fountain; when suddenly two children jumped into my photo (first photo).
They were obviously unattended and could just play in the water (second photo), watched by the other jealous (supervised) children, as the boy on the third photo, who probably wished, that he was also allowed to do the same.
Watching the children playing at the water, I could suddenly remember how much I loved as a child to come to the Piata Mare and run after the pigeons.
And I could see my grandfather sitting on one of the benches in front of the church telling me not to go too close to the water because I get wet.
I wished I was 30 years younger and could lay with the children in the water watching the pigeons around us (photo 4).

Even though my family has always loved my photos, I know that they are not perfect and wining this scholarship would be a great opportunity for me to learn more about photography.

Regards,
Karla Mueller
